Vino Nobile di Montepulciano is the least well-known of the three major Tuscan Appellations — the other two are Chianti and Brunello — though it is perhaps older: Renaissance poets were already singing its praises when Chianti was just a geographic term referring the the area between Florence and Siena, and Brunello hadn’t yet been developed.
Alas, since then Nobile’s fortunes have faded with respect to those of the upstarts. But is this so bad? For the winemakers, but not for consumers, because there is some excellent Nobile di Montepulciano to be had, at more reasonable prices than those commanded by its more sought after cousins.
From 18th to 20th February in the Fortress of Montepulciano the 2009 wines and the 2008 Riserva (both 4 stars vintages) will be presented.

It has been the first fair to have a lasting success and a regular rhythm and has been in the past the theatre of real and true battles for those hunting down the best price during the day and the evening prior to the opening of the market, when the merchandise is still packed in the lorries.
The exhibitors who prepare for the public hundreds of stalls, arrive from every part of Italy and offer with their objects a very wide view of the traditional cultures and regional customs. Along the side of the open exhibition are found the famous traditional antique shops.
